Specialty Care: 1- Day Abortion Care to 20 weeks
Many clinics require a 2-day surgical abortion procedure if you are 13+ weeks pregnant. We understand the many challenges to arranging a 2-day stay.
Our female Dr. trained specially to offer 1-day abortion care for our patients. This option helps many to more easily plan for the time needed, take less time off of work, secure quality childcare, arrange transportation much easier and does not incur the extra cost of hotels, cabs, and so much more. We’re here for you!
Abortion Care Procedure
The surgical abortion procedure by D&E (Dilation and Evacuation) consists of the gradual dilation (opening) of the cervix and the use of gentle vacuum aspiration to empty the contents of the uterus.
If you are 16 weeks or greater, your stay with us will be a bit longer, 4-6 hours. The physician will insert small dilators (laminaria) into the cervix to allow the cervix to slowly dilate. You will take some oral medication to assist in dilation and a pain reliever for any cramps you may experience. When ready, the laminaria will be removed, you will be offered advanced IV sedation and the procedure will then be completed.
This is the safest and most comfortable process for terminating a pregnancy at this stage.
After Your Surgical Abortion
The recovery period is an essential part of your procedure. After the abortion, you will rest in our recovery room for 30-60 minutes, as needed and directed by your Dr.. This time is to ensure your safety and well-being.
Your vital signs will be monitored and you will be given a beverage and a snack. We will also give you birth control pills if requested and ensure you understand your post-operative instructions. Prescriptions given at discharge can be filled at our office for your convenience or at any pharmacy if we do not have them available.
A member of our medical staff is on call 24 hours a day for questions or concerns.
You should return to our facility three weeks after your procedure for a follow-up exam. At this visit, we ensure that you have a negative pregnancy test, check your vital signs and determine that your uterus has returned to its normal, non-pregnant size.
On-Going Birth Control
If you would like to begin or continue birth control pills after the first year, you need to have a current Pap Smear. Call us– We can make your appointment, when you’re ready. Your appointment will include your exam, Pap Smear, and Dr. approved birth control choice. Here, you matter most!
